WANAKA HOTEL, LAKE WANAKA

Back to Case Studies

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Located in the city centre, alongside the stunning Lake Wanaka, the Wanaka Hotel features 68 modern single, double and triple rooms with a maximum capacity of 130 people. As well as beautiful views, the hotel offers a range of facilities including meeting rooms, laundry facilities, and a restaurant which services thousands of visitors every year.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS & CHALLENGES

Previously, the hotel used a 100kw gas boiler for domestic hot water and a 100kw diesel boiler for space heating, serving 63 radiators throughout the facility. This was proving both expensive to run and maintain and conscious of their carbon emissions, the owners decided to invest in a more cost effective and sustainable solution for their facility.

MHI’S SOLUTION

After discussions with the asset owners and local contractors, four Q-ton air-to-water CO2 heat pumps were installed alongside 4,000 litres of hot water storage. This delivered over 120kW worth of energy and enabled the hotel to transition away from expensive and fossil fuel boilers completely.

Additionally, by moving to a CO2 based solution, the hotel was able to drastically reduce it’s carbon emissions by approx. 74% and shrink it’s carbon footprint.

The Q-ton’s ability to efficiently and reliably deliver hot water up to 90oC in temperatures as low as -25oC made it perfect or the hotel which often experience sub-zero temperatures during winter and will deliver both hot water and space heating solution for years to come.
